Visiting Gapcheon
On April 6, the SCIS students went to the Gapcheon River in 6th period instead of taking normal classes. Students crossed the stone bridge, ate ice cream, and took pictures under the cherry blossom trees. Both students and teachers had a great time by the river.
Ms. Oae’s Sermon
 Ms. Oae, Yesol’s grandmother, preached her sermon at chapel. She said that God owns every part of us, and that we should pray and strive to live our lives according to God’s will. She also taught the students that God’s good will can be achieved in this evil world through God’s love when we strive. 
Art Venture                                          
 On April 8, the art club members, Seajin, Ashika, Samuel, E.L., and Daniel, went to the Gapcheon River to draw pictures. They drew on the easels which the SCIS students started to use in art class. Of course, they got permission from the owners of the easels before they brought them. They drew various works of arts using oil pastels, colored pencils, erasers, pencils, markers, etc. They drew the natural scenery and flora around the Gapcheon River.

Pastor Choi’s Sermon
 On April 13, Pastor Choi, a friend of Pastor Um, preached his sermon to the students. He explained man’s three states before Christ died for sins as Romans 5: 6~11 was read: ungodly, sinners, foes to God. 
Pastor Choi taught the students that a foe is one whom I cannot be forgiven, and one who can’t live in the same world as the other. Pastor Choi taught that only through Jesus Christ, according to 1Peter 3:18, are we brought back to God. 
Pastor Um’s Sermon
 On April 20, Pastor Um preached his sermon to the students. He taught them that the relationship with God can only be restored by believing in Jesus, heaven is where there is forgiveness of each other, and a heartfelt “I’m sorry” is a great sentiment. He also gave the students two tasks as homework: One was saying “I’m sorry” often, and another one was going to church on Sunday.
 On April 27, Pastor Um again preached the sermon to the students. He taught the students that their lives change depending on how they govern and guard their hearts through Proverbs 4: 23: “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”(KJV) and William Carey’s saying, “The future before us is as bright as God’s promises.”

Why Do We Exchange Eggs at Easter?
 We all think of eggs at Easter. Then, why did we end up exchanging eggs on Easter? There are many theories as to why we exchange eggs at Easter. The first theory is that expression ‘Easter’ originated from Eostre, the goddess of spring, and the custom of giving eggs and honoring this goddess in Europe merged with Christian traditions and has continued to this day. The Easter Bunny is also said to be associated with this goddess. 
The second theory stemmed from a wife who waited for her conscripted husband during the Crusades, and presented colored eggs to the villagers who cared for her.   
There is also a story about Simon Cyrene, who took up the cross of Jesus, who was an egg seller. The story says the eggs were all turned iridescent when he returned home after Jesus was crucified. As a result, it may have become a symbol of Easter. It is also related to Easter itself, which means that just as a chick breaks an egg, we who have met Jesus are saved, stripped of the old man, and born again.

“Take a chance”- Interview with Mr. Brian
 On April 25, Yesol and Yenok interviewed Mr. Brian in SCIS, which is located in Tamrip-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon. The interview was conducted in a question-and-answer format. Yenok first asked, “What movies or books have impressed you the most?” He cited Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro, a British novelist, who was born in Japan, as the book and movie that impressed him most. He gave another movie, Shadowlands, which was produced in the UK in 1993 and directed by Richard Attenborough. The movie is the story of the life of C.S. Lewis. He also gave “The Explorer” by Rudyard Kipling as his favorite poem. 
Yesol then asked, “What is your favorite work or proverb?” and Mr. Brian replied that it is Ecclesiastes 12:13-14: “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”(KJV) Yenok asked about roles that Mr. Brian has in SCIS now, and he told us that he is a supervisor of LC1 and AP Language teacher. Yesol followd up on this by asking what Mr. Brian learned through teaching students of SCIS. He said that he learned students like order and predictability in class, and students like to make their own decisions. 
Yesol then asked, “What do you think are the most important virtues that teachers should have?” Mr. Brian said he thinks punctuality, diligence, and integrity are the virtues that teachers should have. Yenok also asked, “What do you think are the strengths of SCIS?” Mr. Brian thinks small classes, Christian values, a wide range of students, and great lunches are SCIS’s strengths. For wide range of students, he said he thinks old ones and young ones can benefit from each other. Yesol asked, “Is there anything you want to say to the SCIS students and teachers? Mr. Brian said, “Take a chance. God does not want you to be good but be obedient.

Interview with Calvin
 On April 22, our newspaper club interviewed Calvin in SCIS. First of all, we asked questions about basketball. We asked him, “What do you think of basketball?” He answered, “I think basketball is a very good sport. I personally prefer soccer, but I think I could play basketball in college.” He also said he learned playing basketball from Seahyun, Seajin’s brother, when he lived in the dorm. 
 We asked about Calvin’s favorite food and movies. He replied that pizza and lasagna are his favorite food, and his favorite movies are Spider-man: No Way Home, The Batman, and Percy Jackson.
 Calvin thinks his strength is in sports, and he plans to go to KAIST or Handong University. We asked him, “What do you want to learn in college?” He replied that he wants to learn IT or culinary arts. He cited his 18th birthday as the happiest moment of his life. Finally, we asked, “What do you want to say to SCIS students?” He replied, “Work hard, guys. Life is short.”

Children’s Day
 About 100 years ago, the children in Korea were not treated well. However, thanks to many people who tried to change this situation, including Mr. Jung-hwan Bang, Children’s Day was created. Children’s Day is an effort to make the world a place where ‘young citizens’ can live a humane life. 
On May 1, 1923, they released “The Basic Condition for the Movement of the Youth”, commemorating the first Children’s Day. It consists of three conditions:
1. Treat children with respect by freeing them from conventional ethical pressure. 
2. Abolish labor for children under 14 years of age by freeing them from conventional economical pressure.
3. Build various facilities for children to learn and play adequately. 

SCIS QUIZ

캘빈의 생일이었습니다. 하균이는 캘빈을 위해 매우 귀하고 값비싼 생일 선물을 택배로 보낼 생각이었습니다. 이 선물은 너무나 귀해 누구든지 이 선물을 보면 훔칠 것입니다. 때문에 하균이는 선물상자에 자물쇠를 잠가 캘빈에게 택배로 보냈습니다. 자물쇠의 열쇠는 꼭 하균이가 가지고 있어야 하고 선물상자는 절대로 부러뜨릴 수 없습니다. 캘빈이 자물쇠로 잠긴 선물을 열려면 어떻게 해야 할까요? (선물은 택배로만 배달이 가능하며 자물쇠의 키는 복제가 불가능하고 선물은 “꼭” 잠겨 있어야 합니다.)

It was Calvin's birthday. Hagyun was going to send a very precious and expensive Birthday present by courier(cargo) for Calvin. This gift is so precious that anyone will steal it when they see it. Therefore, Hagyun locked the gift box and sent it to Calvin by courier. Hagyun must keep the key to the lock and the gift box can never be broken. How can Calvin open a locked gift? (Gifts can only be delivered by courier, the key on the lock cannot be duplicated, and the gift “must” be locked.)

Answer: When Calvin receives a locked gift, he locks the gift box again with his own lock. (There are currently two locks on the gift.) Calvin sends a present to Hagyun again. Hagyun, who receives the gift again, opens the lock using the key (now there is one lock in the gift), and Hagyun sends the gift back to Calvin. The gift box now has only the lock that Calvin has locked. Calvin opens the lock with his key and takes out the present!
